Math 10 FPC: April 24 ~ Quiz day

If today’s quiz gave you trouble, ask yourself these questions:

  • Was I prepared for this test? Why or why not?
  • Have I been keeping up with the assigned work?
  • Where can I go to get help with this topic?

I want you all to succeed in class and I believe that everyone of you is capable. If you have been having difficulty, make a point tonight or tomorrow to commit to doing something about it.

I am always in the classroom at lunch for help so come see me. I would love to help.

For those who haven’t finished, please come at lunch to finish your quiz. Don’t put it off to Monday as I wont be able to mark it before the test and therefore, it won’t help you for the Test.

I’m rooting for you

Math 10: April 23 ~ Solving System Word Problems

Do you find these type of questions difficult? Lets try some tactics to make it easier to grasp. First you should find a highlight or two or different colours.

  1. Read the question once over to gain an overall perspective.
  2. Reread the questions carefully using one highlighter to highlight info that is used to create the first equation.
  3. continue reading using the other colour to highlight info for the 2nd equation.
  4. Write your equations out being careful to read the cues in the sentence: ie “4 less means” subtract 4.  “6 times the other number” means muliply that number by 6.
  5. Solve using substitution or elimination.

Quiz tomorrow

Math 10 AW: April 24 ~ 4.9 Area of Composite shapes. Ch 4 test on Apr 30

Things are getting more complex as the unit progresses so make sure you are keeping up with the homework.

As you can see from the past few sections, we need a process for tackling these more complex problems. We can’t solve these problems in one step any more!

Our goal should be to break down the area of the complex object into smaller easier areas to calculate.

Take the house problem on p 115 Q 4

  1. First find the area of the big objects that all the other objects are on top of. Add those together.
  2. Then calculate the areas of each smaller object. Subtract those areas from the larger areas.
  3. You are left with the area of the big shapes minus the small shapes.

Homework is on p 113 – 115 Q 1,4

Should be done Chapter 4 tomorrow. Review day on Monday, and Test on Wednesday.

Math 10 AW: April 23 ~ 4.8 Area of Irregular Polygons

Today’s lesson was tricky for sure.

Lets break it down into smaller manageable steps. First we need to have some sort of quadrilateral shape (four sided uneven shape).

Steps to solve

  1. Divide shape from one point to another using a ruler to form 2 triangles.
  2. Divide each triangle into 2 by drawing a perpendicular line from the remaining point to the line you drew in step 1.
  3. Measure each side of the 4 right triangles using a ruler.
  4. Calculate area of each triangle.
  5. Add all the areas together.

Homework is on pg. 111 Q 1

Reminder: Chapter 5 Test Tomorrow!

Good morning!

Just a final reminder about your Chapter 5 Test tomorrow. As promised, the answer keys to the 5.1-5.5 quiz and the Chapter 5 Review (the one handed out in class today) are posted under the handouts section.

Please remember that your Chapter 5 homework is due tomorrow and your 5.1-5.5 quiz corrections are due Friday.

…and then on to Chapter 6!

Happy Studying 🙂

Math 10 FPC: April 22 ~ 9.3 Word problems and systems

Sorry about the quiz scare today. If you studied, GREAT, you will be ready for it later this week. I think Thursday or Friday is a good day for a quiz. Be prepared for Thursday.

Good luck on the word problems that we worked on today. It is tricky reading word problems and trying to make equations out of the info given. If you find it difficult, try using highlighters or coloured pens to bring the information out of the question.

Homework tonight is on page 499 Q 4,5,8,11,12

the text for this section should be:

Text Section 9.3

Have a great night.

Math 10 A+W: April 22 ~ 4.7 Regular polygons

Conversions!

Don’t be fooled, Conversions are everywhere and you either master them… or they will master YOU!

When figuring out regular polygons, remember the method of finding triangles inside the shape, find the area of one triangle, then multiply by the number of triangles in that shape.

homework tonight is the practice questions after section 4.7. I believe it is page 108- 109 Q1-7.

Have fun and see you tomorrow.
