Getting to know Mrs. Dildy…

In class today I had you fill out a form so I could get to know you a little bit better and learn how to help you achieve success in Math this semester. So it’s only fair that I let you know a little bit about me.

First things first – Contact Information:

e-mail: jdildy@sd63.bc.ca or jessi.dildy@gmail.com

phone #: My cell number is on the course outline… feel free to give me a call or text if you have any questions or concerns. (really!)

website: you found me! www.mrsdildy.com

Getting to know me:

Yes I do have a job. I’m teaching mornings at Claremont and afternoons at Parkland. This is my seventh year teaching, though only my second semester at Parkland and first semester ever working at Claremont (If I look lost, I probably am…). My favourite subjects to teach are biology and math, though I have probably taught just about everything at one point or another as a substitute teacher. I consider it a privilege to come to work everyday to a job I love and to be able to spend time with high school students who I think are some of the coolest people I know.

In the summers I am also a birth doula. I attended my first births last summer which was an incredible and powerful experience. I’d love to tell you about it!

I am also a mom to the most handsome and wonderful one and a half year old boy, Ethan. Since becoming a parent my eyes have been opened in ways I never thought possible. Having a child is the best and hardest thing I’ve ever done. Make sure you hug your mom today! Occasionally you may need to remind me to stop talking about my baby and get back to the math…

In the past I have helped coach the rugby team (at Stellys) in the spring. I love the outdoors and especially the beach. My undergraduate degree at Uvic was in marine biology. My hobbies include cycling, sewing, hiking, camping and reading. My husband is a huge computer nerd so some of that rubs off on me too.

I am a very hands on learner and I remember information best if I write it down myself. I was not any good at math in high school and I know what it is like to struggle through material that seems like it is written in another language, so please do not hesitate to come see me for help.

Any other questions for me? Ask me in the comments

Math 10 – Jan 21 & 22: Mock Provincial Exam

We will be writing an in-class exam similar in length and composition to the provincial exam.

The purpose of this exam is:

  • Become familiar with the procedures of writing a formal exam
  • Provide feedback to students about the topics where they need more review
  • Replace the grade for the lowest test score.
  • (For some international students) Act as a final exam worth 20% of the final grade in lieu of the provincial exam.

Tests will be marked and returned in class on Thursday so students can use the marked tests as a study tool.

Math 10 – Jan 20: Review CH 1,2,3

Ch 3 Review – Trigonometry

Can you:

  • Solve for missing sides of a right triangle using Sine, Cosine and Tangent?
  • Solve for missing angles of a right triangle using inverse Sine, Cosine and Tangent?
  • Solve for missing sides of a right triangle using the Pythagorean Theorem?

Chapter 1 & 2 Review – Measurement, Volume and Surface Area

Can you:

  • Use metric and imperial referants to estimate distances?
  • Read metric and imperial calipers?
  • Convert within and between the metric and imperial systems using unit analysis?
  • Calculate volume and surface area of geometric solids?
  • Rearrange formulas algebraically to find unknown measures?
  • Convert square and cubed units within and between the metric and imperial systems?

Study Tip: Think about your exam writing strategy. Do you like to do the questions you know first and then go back to tough questions? Do you prefer to work straight through the questions in order or work on them topically? How will you flag questions you want to return to?
